Troubleshoot high ping and unstable latency
A fast download can coexist with lag. Delays and their variation affect conversations and games, and need a different investigation from raw throughput.
What to check
Run the separate Ping tool while the connection is otherwise idle. Note that it measures HTTP to this website, not your game endpoint. Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi and VPN off with on. Pause cloud backups and uploads before a repeat. This tool does not directly measure loaded latency or packet loss.
Worked example — illustrative, not a measured result
An idle series around 30 ms followed by much larger delays only while another device uploads suggests queueing or competition for capacity. A steady 150 ms even when idle may instead reflect distance or routing. A single spike cannot establish the cause, and these examples are not actual readings.
What to do next
Schedule backups, reduce competing upload traffic and check router updates. If the router offers documented queue-management settings, follow its manual and compare before and after. Record when the problem occurs and test the affected application too. Persistent wired idle delay merits a provider report with timestamps; no browser button can guarantee a lower ping on every route.
